Overview: Why Trek in the Manaslu Region?

Manaslu is the quieter alternative to the Annapurna and Everest regions. It combines high mountain scenery with living Tibetan Buddhist culture, and its restricted-area status keeps trekker numbers low.

The trek starts at Machhakhola (reached from Arughat) and follows the Budhi Gandaki, an old salt-trading route. It climbs through forests, gorges and stone villages to Samagaon and Samdo. It then crosses Larkya La and descends to Bimthang and Dharapani.

The route was once camping-only. Tea houses now run along the whole circuit, so you get comfortable overnight stops without losing the remote feel.

Top Attractions in the Manaslu Region

  1. Larkya La Pass (5,106 m): the trek's high point, with views of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Cho Oyu and Annapurna II.
  2. Samagaon (3,530 m): the cultural centre of the Nubri valley, with Buddhist monasteries, mani walls and a good base for acclimatization hikes.
  3. Pungyen Gompa and Birendra Lake: popular acclimatization day trips from Samagaon.
  4. Samdo (3,860 m): the last village before the pass, near the Tibetan border, with open mountain views.
  5. Shyala: a high village on the way to Samagaon, with close views of Manaslu and neighbouring peaks.
  6. Bimthang Valley (3,590 m): a wide alpine meadow below Manaslu's western flank, where the pass crossing ends.
  7. Tsum Valley (optional extension): a sacred Buddhist valley with ancient monasteries and a quieter, more traditional way of life.

How to Reach the Manaslu Region

  • Start: drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola & Machhakhola, via Arughat (about 8–10 hours).
  • Finish: the trek ends at Dharapani, followed by a drive via Besisahar to Kathmandu.
  • Roads can be rough, and monsoon landslides may cause delays. Keep a buffer day in your plan.

Manaslu Permits and Rules

The Manaslu Circuit needs several permits, and you cannot trek it independently. A licensed guide and a registered trekking agency are mandatory. Ghumnajaau arranges all permits for you.

Editor's note: fees and group rules change. Confirm all figures with Ghumnajaau and the Department of Immigration before publishing.

Best Time to Trek the Manaslu Region

  • Autumn (September–November): the best overall season, with stable weather, clear skies and the best mountain views.
  • Spring (March–May): blooming rhododendrons, moderate temperatures and good visibility.
  • Monsoon (June–August): avoid it. Landslides, leeches and cloudy views make the trek difficult.
  • Winter (December–February): very cold, and Larkya La may close due to snow.

Difficulty and Altitude Safety

Manaslu is moderate to challenging. It needs good fitness, but no climbing experience.

  • Ascend gradually and take the acclimatization day at Samagaon.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol at altitude.
  • Know the symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness). Descend if they worsen.
  • Larkya La is the hardest day. Start early, before dawn.

Food and Culture

The Manaslu region follows Tibetan Buddhism. Expect prayer flags, mani walls, chortens and monasteries throughout. Always pass mani walls on the left, and ask before photographing people or monasteries.

Food on the trail: dal bhat (the staple), Tibetan bread, butter tea, noodles, soups and simple Western options. Menus get shorter and prices rise as you gain altitude.

Accommodation on the Trek

Tea houses offer twin-sharing rooms, shared bathrooms and a warm communal dining room. Facilities become more basic higher up. Hot showers and device charging usually cost extra.

Travel Tips

  • Packing: layers, good broken-in boots, a warm sleeping bag, a down jacket and trekking poles.
  • Connectivity: mobile signal is limited or absent at altitude. Tell family your plan in advance.
  • Insurance: make sure your policy covers trekking to 5,000+ m and helicopter evacuation.
  • Sustainability: carry out plastic, use refillable bottles and respect local customs.
  • Cash: carry enough Nepali rupees, as there are no ATMs on the trail.
